How should Bandra’s boutiques, cafés and salons protect their names?
Bandra launches more consumer brands per street than almost anywhere in Mumbai, and the registers for its trades are crowded. Three points save most clients trouble.
File for what you actually sell. A café is class 43; if it sells packaged cookies or coffee beans, add class 30. A boutique's clothing is class 25, its bags class 18, and its online store needs nothing extra if it only sells its own goods. A salon is class 44, and the hair-care line it launches is class 3.
Avoid words the whole street uses. "Brew", "Bake", "Studio", "Atelier" and "Glow" are everywhere in these classes. They can sit in a name, but the protection comes from the distinctive part, so make that part strong.
Personal names belong to the right person. Founder-led and influencer brands often use a first name or full name. Registration is possible, but file it in the name of whoever will own the business, usually the founder's company, and never use another person's name without written consent.
The look of a shop interior is hard to protect; register the name and logo, and register original product designs separately.
How does a Bandra café or boutique register its name?
Day 1–2
Search and class advice
We search the name in the classes you trade in, such as 43 for a café, 25 for clothing or 44 for a salon, and flag the crowded words that would weaken it. The written report reaches you within a working day.
Before filing
Paperwork and authorisation
A founder-led brand is filed by the business that will own it. Send the company or Udyam certificate and, where a person’s name is used, that person’s written consent. Form TM-48 is signed and returned by email.
Filing day
Filing with the Trade Marks Registry, Mumbai
Form TM-A goes in online, usually the day you approve the wording. The application number is issued straight away, so the ™ symbol can go on menus, swing tags and the shopfront from opening day.
After filing
Examination, Journal and registration
We reply to any examination objection, often by showing why the distinctive part of the name carries it. After acceptance the mark is advertised in the Trade Marks Journal; anyone may oppose within four months, and an unopposed mark registers for ten years from the filing date.
What are the government fees?
Fees go to IP India per class. Cafés, boutiques and salons run as proprietorships or Udyam-registered firms pay the lower rate; private companies pay the standard rate.

Trademark registration in Bandra: questions
Can a Bandra café register a common English word as its name?
Yes, if the word does not describe the café or its food. "Lantern" for a café can work; "Fresh Brew" cannot, because it describes the product.
An influencer wants to launch a skincare line under her own name. Can it be registered?
Yes, in class 3. File it in the name of the company that will sell the products, with her written consent, so the brand can be licensed or sold later.
Should a Bandra bakery file in class 30 or class 43?
Class 30 for the baked goods it sells, class 43 for café service. A bakery with a seating area usually needs both.
Can a boutique protect the look of its store?
Rarely through a trademark. Protect the name and logo, and register original garment or product designs under the Designs Act.
Does a Bandra registration cover a second outlet in Pune?
Yes. A trademark registered in India covers the whole country, wherever the registry that examined it is.
Do Bandra East offices follow the same process as Bandra West shops?
Yes. Both are in Mumbai, so both file with the Trade Marks Registry, Mumbai, in the same way.
