How should Raipur’s steel and rice businesses protect their brands?
TMT bars and structural steel (class 6). The steel market around Urla and Siltara is full of names built from the same parts: a family or place name plus "Steel", "TMT", "Gold" or a grade. Grade designations such as Fe 500D come from the Indian Standard and describe the product; nobody can register them. What can be registered is a distinctive brand, and the mark rolled into the bar itself, which is often how masons and dealers recognise genuine stock.
BIS certification and a trademark are different things. Certification shows the bars meet the standard; the trademark shows whose bars they are. You need both, and neither replaces the other.
Rice mills (class 30). Chhattisgarh's mills sell rice under trader marks, often with a picture on the bag. Rice variety names, such as Dubraj, describe the grain and stay free for everyone. Register the mill's own name and its bag artwork.
Cement and building materials (class 19) and plant contractors (class 37) register the name used on bags, tenders and site boards.
Nava Raipur hosts government bodies, institutes and a growing number of young companies; software and services brands there usually start with classes 9 and 42.
How does a Raipur business register a trademark?
Day 1–2
Search and class advice
We search word and device marks in class 6, 19 or 30 and point out where your name shares its key word with dozens of others. A crowded word gives you a weak mark even if it registers.
Before filing
Paperwork and authorisation
We check the goods description against your product list, such as TMT bars as against structural sections, and prepare the affidavit of first use for a brand already sold.
Filing day
Filing with the Trade Marks Registry, Mumbai
We file Form TM-A online on IP India. Because the principal place of business is in Chhattisgarh, the application is handled by the Trade Marks Registry, Mumbai. You receive the application number the same day and may use ™ with the mark.
Weeks to months
Examination
An examiner checks the mark against the absolute grounds (section 9) and earlier marks (section 11) and issues an examination report. Reports are published on the IP India status page; we watch it and tell you.
If raised
Objection reply and hearing
Replies to the Mumbai registry are filed online with evidence of sales in Chhattisgarh. Show-cause hearings are attended by us, usually by video, so no one travels from Raipur.
After acceptance
Journal and opposition window
An accepted mark is advertised in the Trade Marks Journal. Any person may oppose it within four months of advertisement.
Unopposed
Registration certificate
The mark is registered and the certificate is issued online. Registration lasts ten years from the application date and renews with Form TM-R.
What documents does a Raipur business need?
Steel units send a photograph of the mark rolled into the bar, if they use one, so it can be filed as a device mark; the BIS licence is a separate approval and is not part of the application. Rice mills send the bag artwork as printed.
Every applicant
- The mark: the word, or a clear JPG of the logo as it will be used
- The goods or services you sell or plan to sell
- Applicant name, address and legal entity

- If the mark is already in use: an affidavit of first use in India, with dated evidence of use
