Frequently asked questions
How many trademark classes are there in India?
Forty-five. India follows the Nice Classification: classes 1 to 34 cover goods and classes 35 to 45 cover services.
Which edition of the Nice Classification does India use?
The Trade Marks Registry applies the edition in force. The 13th edition took effect on 1 January 2026; its main change for most brands moved spectacles, sunglasses and contact lenses from Class 9 to Class 10.
Do I need a separate application for each class?
No. One Form TM-A can cover several classes, with a government fee for each class. Our fee calculator adds up the statutory fees.
My product fits two classes. Which one is right?
It depends on what the product is, not how it is sold. Online sale of goods is a retail service in Class 35, while the goods themselves stay in their own class. Our guide to choosing trademark classes covers the common mix-ups.
Is the class finder enough to file my application?
It is a starting point. The application needs a precise list of goods and services in each class, which an agent drafts and checks against the Registry’s accepted terms.
